Culturally Responsive Mental Health Support

Increasing access to culturally responsive mental health and well-being supports

In July 2025, St. David’s Foundation launched the Culturally Responsive Mental Health Support funding opportunity, focused on increasing the number of Central Texans from historically marginalized communities receiving culturally responsive mental health and well-being supports. Throughout our region, systemic barriers and inequitable policies often make it more difficult for historically marginalized communities to access the mental health support they need.

The Culturally Responsive Mental Health Support open call awarded $4.2M through 33 grants. An additional $415,000 will be used to provide technical support to grantees for sustainability and to enhance regional infrastructure. Of the grants awarded, 55% of organizations are new grantees, meaning they are receiving a grant from the Foundation for the first time. These investments will increase the number of Central Texans from historically marginalized communities receiving culturally responsive mental health and well-being supports that honor their racial and cultural identities in trusted spaces in community.

The 33 grants awarded as part of this open call anticipate serving more than 28,000 individuals in Central Texas with culturally responsive mental health support.

Overview

Systemic barriers and inequitable policies often make it more difficult for historically marginalized communities to access the mental health support they need. Many people from these communities may not trust doctors or therapists, because providers don’t always understand or respect a patient’s culture or life experiences. Additional challenges such as high costs, provider shortages, lack of transportation, confusing systems, and fear of judgement make it harder to get help. As a result, those who most need support are often the least likely to receive it.

The Culturally Responsive Mental Health Support funding opportunity sought to increase the number of Central Texans from historically marginalized communities receiving culturally responsive mental health and well-being supports that honor their racial and cultural identities in trusted spaces in community. The focus centered on:

  • Preventative supports rather than clinical mental health services that focus on diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions
  • Non-clinical, community -based supports in settings outside of traditional healthcare clinical environments
  • Supports with a clear and direct impact on the mental health or well-being of historically marginalized Central Texans
