Advancing safe, healthy, and affordable housing as a platform for health and stable income creation.
Rapid growth in Central Texas has created a significant housing affordability crisis. Current housing solutions are not keeping pace with regional expansion. According to St. David’s Foundation’s most recent Community Health Needs Assessment, residents identified the lack of affordable housing as one of the most pressing community conditions impacting their health. The high cost of housing forces difficult trade-offs for many in our community, leaving limited resources for basic needs. This strain creates stress and instability that erodes health and limits opportunity, particularly in rural areas where affordable housing remains a critical need.
The shortage of affordable housing in Central Texas contributes to widening health disparities, underscoring that safe and affordable housing is essential for individuals and communities to thrive.
Driving Impact
By 2030, St. David’s Foundation seeks to leverage public, private, and philanthropic resources to increase the number of safe, healthy, and affordable housing options and strengthen efforts to improve the affordable housing ecosystem across the Central Texas region. Through partnerships and strategic funding, we envision communities where housing stability creates a foundation for improved health outcomes, especially for populations experiencing the greatest housing insecurity and health disparities.
Approach
St. David’s Foundation’s approach is centered on developing capacity and leveraging resources to help communities navigate complex housing challenges.
We will:
- Invest in cross-sector strategies that strengthen the region’s capacity to meet current and future housing needs—especially in rural and historically marginalized communities
- Complement public efforts and leverage public and private resources to catalyze long-term, structural improvements in housing access and affordability
