Safety Net Care

Supporting access to primary, dental, perinatal, and behavioral health services while increasing and diversifying the healthcare workforce to meet the growing demand.

Nearly half of Texans report difficulty affording health care. Our region’s primary care safety net plays a critical role in ensuring that primary, as well as dental, maternal, and mental health care is accessible for uninsured and underinsured residents.

However, safety net clinics—including Federally Qualified Health Centers and other providers serving those most in need—often lack necessary resources. Limited public funding, uncertain revenue sources, and rising costs of patient care make it challenging to meet the growing demand for services across Central Texas.

Driving Impact

By 2030, St. David’s Foundation seeks to significantly increase the number of uninsured and underinsured Central Texans receiving primary, dental, maternal, and mental health services through investments in service delivery by organizations that provide care to those who cannot afford it. Our focus is on ensuring that the safety net remains robust, adaptable, and capable of meeting the needs of our most vulnerable populations.

Approach

St. David’s Foundation’s approach is centered on strengthening service delivery through a renewed and re-envisioned commitment to improving access to care in partnership with the community. Our grantmaking will focus on providing significant, long-term, and data-informed investments in primary care safety net providers.

We will use this data to support ongoing collaboration with safety net providers to shape strategies, learn together, and adapt to meet the evolving needs of our community.
